| 内容記述 | Robert Frost, in his poems, lays emphasis on the importance of moderation in everything. He talks of the middle position and is against acting in extremes. In such poems as "The Secret Sits" or "The Middleness of the Road," he comes up with the ideal of the middle position. But there the middle position still retains not a little of the original mathematical idea. But the idea of nothing too much is more or less evident in a great deal of his poems, From this ideal of the Golden Mean stems such virtues as self-restraint, moderation, gentleness, temperance, etc. Self-restraint is the moral Matthew Hale draws from his experience with his three golden apples. "Take Something Like a Star" advocates moderation in both blame and praise. In "Dust in the Eyes" the poet-persona hints that he would like to be wise, but that to be overwise wouldn't do. "The Egg and the Machine" is a vigorous protest of Frost's against the scientific culture that obtained in the U.S. at the beginning of the 20th century. This article is the first half of the thesis which is going to take up and explicate poems which are permeated by Frost's Ideal of the Golden Mean. | |||||
