| 内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to seek more effective use of audio visual technology in the English language teaching at college level. In order to accomplish this purpose, author tries to reveal the difficulties found in the foreign language classroom settings, and to minimize those difficulties by utilizing audio visual aids more effectively. Focused is particulary made on the English language instruction in the language laboratory. Then, he attempts to construct better foreign language learning environment through a newly opened college facility, Audio Visual Center, which enables students to access to various AV (Audio Visual) materials more freely and effectively. Back to his first purpose, he sets three different learning settings. First, at Phase I, he discusses rather restricted learning setting where the learners are confined in the language laboratory booth. The main purpose of learning here is to gain the skill of distinguishing and articulating various English sounds. In other words, at this stage, learning is focused on attaining the fundamental liguistic knowledge. Learning here is achieved by reacting only to the instructional materials on the TV screen, where no verbal interaction between instructors and the learners is required. All learning here, therefore, would be somewhat more passive rather than active. Then, at Phase II, author presents open classroom setting where the verbal interactive discourses between instructor and the learners, and the one among the learners, are freely made by using various non-verbal behavior; namely, facial expression and gesture. Needless to reminds that language is basically a means of communication utilized by both verbal and non-verbal behavior. Forming the above two types of behavior, therefore, is vitally important in the foreign language learning. After having formed this basic linguistic performability, the skill of manipulating various English sounds at Phase I, students move to the next stage where non-verbal communication is strongly emphasized. Finally, at Phase III, author discusses group learning setting where all language learning is attained by group wise. Students are divided into groups and they react to the assignment by discussing the topics and they reach their decision within the groups. This type of learning is somewhat more practical than the above two phases, Phase I and II, for most of our daily verbal communication is practiced exactly the same manner as done at Phase III. Author concludes that greater fruits of foreign language learning can only be achieved by wellballanced these three types of foreign language learning settings. Turning to the second aim of this research, author tries to re-evaluate the learning environment of the college students. They form their learning through various instructional media; namely, the lecture given by the faculties, reading in the college library, and doing their assignment at home. To this learning environment above, author tries to add another type of instructional media, audio visual media, which are utilized by the students through a new college facility, Audio Visual Center (AV Center). To reveal the function of AV Center, author introduces newly opened Audio Visual Center in Chukyo University. The Center has various functions. One of the major function is to utilize various AV materials in the Center, where free access is allowed to any students. Out of daily class schedule, students study with the help of AV materials in the booth whenever they find their own time. This is one of the ways of expanding their own learning environment. Students also can copy the AV materials while they study in the booth, and they can take those copied materials home to review. This is how they connect their study on the campus and the one at home, which also gives students better and more extensive learning environment. Thus, it could be said that the function of the Center is identical with the one of the college library, where also free access is allowed to any students. One of the aims of the college English teaching is to establish more authentic English language environment on the Japanese campus. And, by the recent outcome of highly technical development of electronics, this is accomplished in the language laboratory booth, where students react to the English language environment on the TV screen. Here, they can experience almost the real life of the U.S. or England without having any trouble of going there. Constructing this type of learning environment, author concludes, is exceptionally important to the English language teaching on the Japanese college campus which is remoted far from the English language spoken environment. | |||||
