The subject of the study consisted of men's games after the league semifinals of the 1996 All-Japan Intercollegiate Handball Championship. The subject teams were determined by data recorded during the championship. The subject games were videotaped and analyzed as to the results of play and other analysis factors. The main results were as follows : (1) In ball acquisition situations, 55.2 percent of the cases consisted of a fast break following a shot and 29.6 percent following a turnover. Concerning the relation between ball acquisition situations and playing patterns, in over 70 percent of the cases a fast break was followed by a loose ball from a turnover. (2) With regard to the first area utilized by the players, all of the initial action took place in the back court in the fast break ; 58.6 percent was in the danger zone. (3) The participants on offense had the most goal throw to the goal keeper. About 40 percent were fast breaks following a loose ball from a turnover, and over 30 percent were following a rebound to a court player.
