| 内容記述 | The purpose of this study was to analyze the 'Syllabuses' of the Health Lectures in Amherst College, which were edited by Edward Hitchcock, Jr. from 1876 to 1888, and compare the contents of the sayllabuses with those of G. A. Leland's lectures of the theories of physical education at the National Normal School of Gymnastics in 1880-81 (estimated) to identify the characteristics of modern physical education introduced into Japan. The results of this study are as follows : 1) Among the text books and other bibliography at the National Normal School there were some fundamental books of medicine written by the same author that the syllabuses cited. 2) Both the Note of physical education theories by Leland and the 1876 Syllabus (A Course of Instruction in the Department of Physical Education and Hygiene in Amherst College) were described theoretically as well as systematically. However, the former has a character of the appllied side of the medical knowledges to physical education while the latter has that of understanding the facts and theories of health. 3) The former relatively relied on many of the statements and facts of the same author as the latter referred to. At the same time the latter also included many statements and facts from other scholars, such as Elwin Baelz, whom E. Hitchcock did not owe. It was a unique viewpoint to discuss heredity, climate, and social customs in order to introduce modern physical education into Japan. 4) Although the latter manifested the faith of Christianity, the former restrained it. | |||||
