| 内容記述 | Schools in Japan developed the 'Undokai' early in the Meiji Era and it has become a traditional school event in which all students should participate. It has gradually come to include some events from track and field, gymnastics, children's play and games, school dance, marching, pageantry and other recreational activities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the historical development of the 'Undokai', especially in schools and to discover its characteristics which the authors consider have not been fully disclosed. The results were as follows : 1) Teachers and organizers have often emphasized an equal opportunity to participate in 'Undokai' events ; therefore those in which only a few selected athletes enter are restricted to events such as relay races. 2) Track and field events were likely to be limited solely to some type of track event if students compete. 3) Gymnastics events were used for demonstrative elements in an 'Undokai' and reflected the gymnastics' system authorized by the Ministry of Education or popular ones of the period. 4) Dance events have become most suited for girls, emphasize feminity and draw attention from all spectators. 5) Although both central and local educational authorities sometimes warned teachers against the economic costs of holding an 'Undokai', the "luxurious" atmosphere of this event actually gave it a village-festival like character. | |||||
