内容記述 | In recent years, the high competitiveness of Toyota in international markets has been attracting worldwide attention. It has generally been asserted that the main reasons for Toyota's success have been the just-in-time (JIT) system, small-group production, and worker diligence, but I consider that the key to understanding the secret of Toyota's high competitiveness is the labour-management relations factor. The features of Toyota's production system cited above-JIT, small-group activities, and the so-called worker diligence factor-can only be effective in the context of co-operative labour-management relations. A similar reason explains the smooth introduction of microelectronic production equipment (ME) ; Mr Keimei Yamamoto, the first secretary of the Toyota Labour Union and Personnel Manager during the strife of 1950, agrees: "They say much about Toyota's JIT system and the suggestion scheme, but these could not operate without a co-operative labour-management system." Often-noted features of the Japanese management style are, among others, the seniority-based wage system, lifetime employment, enterprise unions, and collectivism ; I would lay the most stress on the enterprise unions. Recently, the Japan Federation of Employer Associations (Nikkeiren) praised the labour-management relations aspect of the Japanese management style, of which Toyota is a typical example. In fact, a better term to describe Toyota and Labour Union relations would be unity rather than capital-labour co-operation ; in this paper I shall attempt to clarify this point by analysing the election of union officials in the Toyota group. The success of Toyota is in part due to its smooth adoption of technological change, which is in turn the result of the efforts of management and the union working as one ; at bottom, the whole system rests on the willingness of workers to sacrifice themselves. | |||||
