| 内容記述 | The main objective of this article is to explore a Minimalist-based approach (Chomsky 1993, 1994) to negative polarity item (NPI) licensing. More precisely, drawing primarily upon evidence from one crucial case of NPI licensing in English that constitutes a real testing ground for the validity of this theory, I shall argue, contrary to what has widely been assumed in the literature, that the structural relation holding between an NPI and its licenser is established solely at the level of LF, so that neither D- nor S-structure representation is necessary or sufficient any longer to account for the essential properties of NPI licensing (even) in English. If this conclusion is indeed correct, then we will be led to provide further strong support for Chomsky's (1993) central thesis that the so-called D- and S-structures are unnecessary and hence eliminable as independent levels of representation from the theory of grammar. | |||||
