内容記述 It has long been asserted that prior learning affects subsequent learning, positively when the learning tasks coincide and negatively when they differ, and in practice we often come across cases where structural or semantic differences and similarities between a learner's native and target languages are very clearly reflected in the way he learns the latter. It would be, however, a gross mistake to seek the causes of errors the learner may make exclusively in this psychological aspect. There are a variety of other factors which influence the process of learning. For example, some errors may be based on the overgeneralization of patterns learned earlier and others on incomplete acquisition of such patterns and failure to recognize semantic distinction. It is, therefore, of vital importance to clarify whether "interferences" found in the process of learning represent influence from the native language or from earlier acquired knowledge of the target language. From this viewpoint I have made a series of investigations into errors Japanese students of English so often make, to determine what influence their mother tongue or their prior learning will exert on their learning of English. The investigations are intended to provide teachers with useful information for more efficient and effective teaching strategies. In this paper my inquiry is to be focused on the learning of English tenses. The items to be discussed are as follows : -I. Recognition and Expression of Time 1. Time and Tenses 2. Tenses and Modals 3. Tenses and Aspects 4. Time in Subordinate Clauses II. Structure of Tenses III. Meaning of Tenses 1. Meaning of Present Tense 2. Meaning of Past Tense 3. Meaning of Future Modal IV. Tenses in Subordinate Clauses 1. Sequence of Tenses 2. Bound Clauses and Tenses 3. Relative Clauses and Tenses V. Verification
