Ten healthy subjects participated pre- and post-tests with each leg. For EX_, after warm-up a weight was added each min until exhaustion. EX_ was similar, but after warm-up, a thigh cuff was inflated to 150mm Hg instead of adding weights. One leg was chosen for TR_ (cuff inflated to 150mm Hg during exercise) and the other for TR_, both with a small weight on each leg, 4-6 times for 3-5 min each per daily session, 5 days per week for 6 weeks. EX_ duration increased 120% more (P=0.002) in the TR_ leg than in the contra-lateral TR_ leg, whereas EX_ duration increased only 16% (NS). TR_ and TR_ significantly attenuated the ventilation increase (ergoreflex) during EX_. The O_2 debt for EX_ was significantly lower and systolic blood pressure recovery was faster after TR_ than after TR_. Heart rate recovery after EX_ and EX_ was faster after TR_.
